Role of Advisory Group Members

The Advisory Group is a collection of individuals who bring knowledge, experience, skills and commitment to planning and decision-making at the Fund. The committee’s composition is representative of the diverse needs of the communities served. Advisory Group member functions include:

  1. Support the mission of the Fund and advise in setting Fund strategies, policies and grant making priorities.

  2. Members contribute to future planning and provide feedback on the Fund’s evolution and general direction.

  3. Help identify leaders, organizations and on-the ground projects in targeted communities that would benefit from partnership with the Fund.

  4. Members attend and fully participate in Advisory Group meetings and quarterly conference calls.

  5. Members participate in various programmatic activities of the Coast Gulf Fund. Programmatic activities include leading workshops, participating in fundraising efforts, speaking engagements, conducting grantee visits, etc.

  6. Members serve as a public advocate for the Coast Gulf Fund among community members, policy leaders and the philanthropic community to increase awareness of GCF existence and values.

  7. Members contribute as grant reviewers and panelists in GCF grant cycles to assist in making funding determinations. Members are also asked to recommend ways to improve the grantmaking process and to outreach to current and potential grantees about upcoming grant opportunities, deadlines and cycles.

Role of Grants Panelists

A sub-committee of the Advisory Group will form a panel of proposal reviewers and will meet to determine grant recommendations for declination and for support with suggested amounts. Each panel will:

  1. Read and review grant proposals before and during the panel meeting.

  2. Check proposals against the grant criteria approved by the advisory committee.

  3. Recommend proposals for funding based on the grant criteria.

  4. Recommend ways to improve the process for grantees and for the next panel.
